Making My Own Moisturizer

Creativity is subjective. As I got older, I noticed that over-the-counter moisturizing creams no longer worked on my skin the way they once did. After only a few hours, I found myself reaching for more and reapplying. That’s when I started to wonder: how hard would it be to make my own cream? As it turned out, not hard at all. Some things are only as difficult as you choose to make them. I do not sell this product only gift to my family and use myself.

Keeping it simple, I did some online research and came up with a recipe that was very achievable for a beginner.

The next step was sourcing the materials. During my search, I discovered an online shop called Bomar, which—by coincidence—was only a 30-minute drive from where I live. So, I went shopping! It gave me the same excitement I get when walking into an art or hobby shop. They offer a great range of natural products, essential oils, and containers. To keep costs down, I chose some organic items, but not all. I bought the coconut oil from ALDI supermarket, and found containers and labels online through Temu.

I purchased 100% natural beeswax (200 g) for €20.83, which is easy to buy online, including from Bomar. Bomar clearly lists product prices on their website.

Note: Over time, I’ve adjusted the recipe and experimented with different oils while keeping the basic structure the same. Other oils I’ve used include sweet almond, avocado, and castor oil. Once you’ve made it, feel free to experiment to find what works best for your skin—we’re all different. (ALWAYS DO A SKIN TEST PATCH BEFORE FULL USE)

RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp shea butter

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

  • ½ tsp rosehip oil

  • ½ tsp jojoba oil

  • 2 tsp 100% natural beeswax pellets (or buy beeswax blocks and grate them)

  • 5–10 drops essential oil (e.g. lavender or may chang—your choice)

Method:

  1. Ensure all containers are clean and sterilized.

  2. Using a double boiler(I use a Pyrex jug in a saucepan), gently melt the shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax until fully dissolved. Do not boil—use steady, low heat.

  3. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.

  4. Add the remaining oils and essential oils, then mix well before pouring into containers.

  5. Label with date made and ingredients.
